چکیده

Free-boundary 3D tokamak equilibria and resistive wall instabilities are calculated using a new resistive wall model in the two-fluid M3D-C1 code. In this model, the resistive wall and surrounding vacuum region are included within the computational domain. This implementation contrasts with the method typically used in fluid codes in which the resistive wall is treated as a boundary condition on the computational domain boundary, and has the advantage of maintaining purely local coupling of mesh elements. This new capability is used to simulate perturbed, free-boundary non-axisymmetric equilibria; the linear evolution of resistive wall modes (RWMs); and the linear and nonlinear evolution of axisymmetric vertical displacement events (VDEs). Calculated growth rates for a resistive wall mode with arbitrary wall thickness are shown to agree well with analytic theory. Equilibrium and VDE calculations are performed in diverted tokamak geometry, at physically realistic values of dissipation, and with resistive walls of finite width. Simulations of a VDE disruption extend into the current-quench phase, in which the plasma becomes limited by the first wall, and strong currents are observed to flow in the wall, in the scrape-off layer (SOL), and from the plasma to the wall.

Interaction of scrape-off layer currents with magnetohydrodynamical instabilities in tokamak plasmas

A simple theoretical model is developed which describes how current eddies are excited in the scrape-off layer SOL of a large-aspect-ratio, low, circular cross-section tokamak by time-varying magnetohydrodynamical instabilities originating from within the plasma. This model is used to study the interaction of SOL currents with tearing modes and resistive wall modes in a typical tokamak plasma. ...

Three Dimensional Effects in Tokamaks – How Tokamaks Can Benefit From Stellarator Research

The paper deals with three dimensional effects in tokamaks that can be approximated by slowly varying 3d equilibria so that their theoretical description and corresponding code developments can benefit from stellarator research. We investigate the effect of magnetic field ripple and perturbation fields (magnetic islands, external coils) on fast particle orbits in ITER and ASDEX Upgrade equilibr...

Externally Induced Rotation of the Resistive Wall Modes in RFX-mod

Introduction During the last years, significant progress was made in the control of resistive wall modes (RWMs) in reversed field pinches (RFPs). It was demonstrated on several different devices that static current driven RWMs can be completely suppressed and controlled [1,2]. It is well known that also tokamak advanced scenarios suffer from RWM instabilities. The RWM in a tokamak is typically ...

Stability of highly shifted equilibria in a large-aspect-ratio tokamak.

High beta poloidal tokamaks can confine plasma pressures an order of magnitude higher than their low beta poloidal counterparts. The theoretical stability of these high beta poloidal magnetohydrodynamics equilibria was left unresolved for many years. Using modern computational tools, such configurations are now found stable to Mercier, resistive and high-n (ideal and resistive) ballooning crite...

Modeling of Feedback and Rotation Stabilization of the Resistive Wall Mode in Tokamaks

This paper describes the modeling of the feedback control and rotational stabilization of the resistive wall mode (RWM) in tokamaks. A normal mode theory for the feedback stabilization of the RWM has been developed for an ideal plasma with no toroidal rotation. This theory has been numerically implemented for general tokamak geometry and applied to the DIII-D tokamak. It is found that feedback ...
